A Q&A with Mike Gahir, from Lakes Showering Spaces

March 21, 2024

Here we talk to Mike Gahir, Managing Director at Lakes Showering Spaces, an innovative manufacturer of shower enclosures and spaces, to discuss how Acorn’s commitment to creating a cleaner supply chain aligns with Lakes’ industry leading sustainability credentials and practices.

Can you tell us about Lakes and Acorn’s relationship and how long you’ve worked with us?

This is a new relationship for us and one we’re very excited about – we pride ourselves on building partnerships on trust, shared commitments, and mutual values – we’re delighted that Acorn recognises this and we’re looking forward to what the future holds.

Our aim for this partnership is to provide Acorn with innovative and sustainable solutions when designing their bathrooms. Just like Acorn, we’re an independent business with a strong reputation for quality.

We are excited to see where this new partnership takes us and believe anything is possible working alongside Acorn.

Can you tell us about your sustainability credentials and policies?

We’ve been established since 1986 and have built an award-winning reputation as a leading manufacturer of innovative showering spaces – stylistically this ranges from timeless classics to contemporary designs, catering for a wide range of bathrooms sizes and styles.

We truly believe that we are setting a new standard for sustainability in the shower industry, with our Carbon Neutral Plus certification a prime example of the traceable impact of our practices.

Acorn’s commitment to achieving its net-zero carbon goal by 2035 means that it is assessing every element of its supply chain and working with organisations who are taking action, so it’s great for us that our work has been recognised.

Some of our most impactful initiatives include:

  • Achieving a 24% reduction in carbon emissions between 2019 and 2023, made possible thanks to optimising delivery routes and transitioning our sales car fleet to electric vehicles.
  • Our packaging is now 100% recyclable, removing approximately 2,000 kilometres of plastic banding and nearly two million pieces of polystyrene a year from landfill.
  • By re-engineering our packaging processes, we’ve achieved a 35% reduction in freight requirements and associated carbon emissions.
  • We were the first company in our sector to obtain the Carbon Footprint Standard and continue to audit all greenhouse gas emissions, allowing us to consistently offset more carbon than we produce.

All of this has helped us achieve the Carbon Neutral Plus certification, which is a source of pride for our business.

What are the benefits of using a Lakes shower enclosure in the home?

What really sets us apart from the rest is our adaptability, experience and of course, quality.

From the clarity of the glass to the quiet glide of the doors and even the reassuring feel of the tray under our feet, we consider every element of the showering space, to make sure it suits the needs of the people using it.

There are a couple of unique benefits we implement as standard procedure that positively impact the end user.

Our AllClear coating – a patented stay-clean coating technology – repels water, limescale, and soap scum so shower glass virtually cleans itself.

We also believe that Lakes’ quality extends beyond ergonomics and craftsmanship. Our service is recognised as being amongst the best in the business and our precision engineering gives us the confidence to offer a no-quibble Lifetime Guarantee.

We also take great pride in supporting installers, by making this crucial element as simple as possible.

What exciting developments do you have on the horizon?

We have several new product launches in the pipeline, including the launch of Wave Brushed Brass, following on from the successful launch of Wave Black earlier in 2023.

Our bathrooms at St. Leonards Quarter in Exeter and Manor Court in The Cotswolds currently feature Lakes Shower Spaces – to view these click here
