  • Acorn buys site in Bristol

    The Planner    22 August 2017

    Developer Acorn Bristol has purchased Brandon Yard, a 58-unit harbourside scheme in the centre of Bristol.
    The development, which already has planning permission, will be led by Acorn, in partnership with Galliard Homes.
    It comprises a mix of new-build homes and the conversion of two grade II listed buildings. The apartments will have one, two or three bedrooms.

    An exciting discovery was unearthed at our Trilogy site on Harper Road, when builders from Galliard Construction revealed a Roman sarcophagus.

    The sarcophagus has been safely moved to the Museum of London and an archaeological excavation is being carried out.

    Former care facility set to undergo restoration

    Under its new name, The Links, the former convalescent home will become apartments.

    The Rest, a convalescent home in Porthcawl overlooking Rest Bay and out towards the Bristol Channel, is a favourite building for locals and, after years of uncertainty, its future has been secured. The grade II-listed Rest was built in the late 1860s with advice from Florence Nightingale, fresh from the war in the Crimea, and became a sanctuary for injured miners. But it has been left idle after the last residents departed five years ago.

    Acorn bought the site at the start of this year. The original planning permission was approved in 2012. As part of the application the previous owner followed good practice and commissioned a desktop site investigation. However, as part of our due diligence we were concerned that the site may have had significant contamination as the site was historically adjacent to an old gas works. As such we commissioned an intrusive site survey and at the same time checked the ground conditions to establish the extent and design of the foundations.
