Born in Bridgend, Steven 54, knows South Wales very well: having left as a young man he still has lots of family good friends in the area.
Growing up he had always felt that Rest Bay was the nicest beach in the area and it has remained one of his favourite spots at which to walk his dog, Arthur, when he and his partner return for visits: Steven’s parents only live miles from Rest Bay, and he had always joked that if the striking property overlooking the bay was ever converted into luxury apartments, he would sign up immediately!
Steven had always wanted a home close to the sea and the years spent living in London and Cambridge had highlighted just how much he missed this. Having built a successful private nursery business, Chestnut Nursery Schools, in 2017 Steven and his partner were ready to start their search for a coastal home in earnest: his only condition? That it had to be close enough to the beach and sea to see them from the property.
As travel, along with cycling, tennis, cooking and art collecting, is one of Steven’s hobbies, the search for a coastal home was not restricted to the UK, with friends in the South of France and Portugal’s Algarve both locations were also strong contenders.
On one of their visits back to Wales in autumn 2017, they decided to go for a walk along the Coastal Path in Rest Bay. Steven immediately noticed the signs announcing the planned development of The Links so he made a note of the web address and registered their interest.
When the Marketing Suite opened at The Links, Steven was one of the early visitors, making the decision to buy on the spot when he saw that his choice of apartment with a balcony facing the sea was available. He was in luck and made the decision to buy on the spot.
As this was to be a second home, they knew that they wanted something that was easy to ‘lock up and leave’ and that would also provide space for some of Steven’s ever-increasing collection of art: as a supporter of the charity Art for Youth, he is always buying new works to support young artists.
Steven said, “It is strange to think that I have been coming to Rest Bay since I was a child and walked past the site so many, many times: never did I think for a moment that we would live here.”
“A bit of a hidden gem, Rest Bay is certainly not the largest, but it is beautiful. The location of The Links is also ideal, with probably the best view of the bay, sitting beside and just above the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Even though I don’t play we really appreciate the course being there.”
“We completed the purchase during lockdown and were only able to move in after the easing of restrictions and it was great to find that The Links community was already starting to form, with lots of different people, who like us, all feel so lucky to live here.”
“We have already had some local friends over to meet us on the beach, which was great, and they were amazed by the location and The Links.”
“The finish and specification of the apartment is excellent, which only adds to the pleasure of being here, whether visiting family or just to enjoy the bay. The beach is a strong focal point and despite being a relatively small community there always seems to be something going on, whether its walkers crossing the bay, or surfers coming to catch waves or the wind.”
