The Journey Behind The Liner: An AHCS Perspective

March 1, 2022

We are delighted to share that our striking coastal development, The Liner, is now fully build complete and occupied. Enjoying a prime oceanfront position in the heart of Falmouth, the site was formerly occupied by the Falmouth Beach Hotel which operated between 1984 and 2012. Today, this imaginative regeneration project boasts a six-storey ocean liner style building comprising 53 luxury apartments, including two duplex penthouses, complete with private outside space and uninterrupted south-facing sea views over the award-winning Gyllyngvase Beach.

Built by AHCS, Acorn’s direct construction arm, we catch up with David Brunton, Construction Director, about the story and success of this unique project.

David Brunton, Construction Director for Acorn’s Devon & Cornwall Region, Acorn Blue

“In 2016 I approached the Board at Acorn to put forward a business plan that would allow us to manage our own builds going forward. After delivering my proposal, I was given the green light to get this new business up and running. We approached staff within the industry in Cornwall who had worked well on our behalf and made offers, resulting in a full team for our first AHCS project, The Dunes in Perranporth. This was a very successful build with regards to the quality of finish and materials used which is highlighted in the host of prestigious awards the development has won including Best Residential Development in the South West with RICS, LABC and the Insider Property Awards.

On completion of The Dunes, the team were split up and we increased our staff numbers to allow us to operate at both The Courtyard at Duporth and The Liner in Falmouth.

I am a member of Falmouth Golf Club and play in all competitions. You can see The Liner from the 14th fairway, and I often ask players what they think of the building and the majority love it. The Liner is an iconic building with shaped precast balconies highlighting the ‘hull’ of the building and curved roofs representing the waves streaming off the bow as she ploughs through the waves. Once you explain the design to people, they understand what the shape is all about.

The team and I enjoyed every day building The Liner despite the many challenges we faced. Would we do it again? Of course we would. AHCS are becoming the number one company for delivering this type of project in the South West. ‘Solutions in Construction’, is what we have printed on to the back of our hi viz jackets, because that’s exactly what we bring, solutions not problems.”

The Liner is now fully sold however if you are still on the search for your dream waterside retreat, discover our Coastal Collection.
